Yesterday, on the eve of Turtle Island's National Day of Mourning, Brazilian military police committed violence against Indigenous people protesting for water.

"The shock troops of the Mato Grosso do Sul Military Police raided the Jaguapiru Indigenous community in the Dourados Indigenous Reserve on Wednesday morning.

The police action, considered disproportionate by the Indigenous people, began on the MS-156 highway, which cuts through the Dourados Reserve, where the Indigenous people had begun a protest denouncing the lack of water that is plaguing at least 5,000 Terena and Guarani Kaiowá.

According to definitive information, two indigenous people were arrested, there were arrest warrants, and at least 20 indigenous people (data from Aty Guasu) ended up injured by rubber bullet shots and bombs, as well as respiratory problems caused by pepper spray.

Three of the injured, two women and a child, were sent to hospital, but are doing well and are scheduled to be discharged in the late afternoon.

In the late afternoon, the Terena and Guarani Kaiowá once again blocked the MS-156 highway."

The Energy Permitting Reform Act of 2024 (EPRA) is a dirty deal AFFECTING ALL COMMUNITIES and might be getting closer to the voting floor‼️Email your legislators today (link in bio).

Fossil fuel companies and their beneficiaries in Congress want to make the permitting bill sound innocuous, if not advantageous, so our legislators feel like they’re doing the right thing, but let’s break down what “making it easier to build energy projects” means to communities:

😡 The “energy projects” the bill predominantly supports are fossil fuel projects, which will create pollution with wide-ranging and long-term health impacts in already overburdened communities, exacerbate climate change, and deepen our dependence on fossil fuels.

😡The bill “makes it easier” to build “energy projects” by making it harder for communities to decide what happens in their own neighborhoods: it strips communities of our right to public participation and self-determination – the ones that are guaranteed by the National Environmental Policy Act.

Today we celebrate World Fisheries Day. Food sovereignty and a right relationship with the Earth includes the work of fisherfolk. They struggle against state and corporate powers that have devastated fish populations and prevented small-scale producers' access to (and right to sustainably manage) waters.

This week, our grantee ally the @world_forum_of_fisher_peoples met in Brazil for their 8th General Assembly. The assembly brought together hundreds of delegates, activists, and allies from across the globe to discuss and strategize on the future of fisheries, food sovereignty, and the fight against the global exploitation of oceans and fisheries.

Tomorrow, October 16, the global movement for food sovereignty is organizing an online event to launch the next @nyeleniforum!

The International Planning Committee for Food Sovereignty (IPC), a global coordination space led by social movements, was created in 2003 to make the participation of fisherfolk, Indigenous Peoples, and peasants more effective in global policymaking.

The Nyéléni global process, coordinated through the IPC, includes regional consultations with different social sectors on strategies for addressing critical issues like hunger, patriarchy, climate change, and threats to the territorial rights of Indigenous Peoples, peasants, and other frontline constituencies.

Grassroots International has been a proud supporter from the very beginning.

Grassroots International expresses its heartfelt condolences to the family, friends, and fellow organizers of Honduran land and environmental defender Juan López, violently murdered by armed assailants on 14 September 2024. As we mourn this loss, we are reminded of the 2016 murder of our beloved Berta Cáceres, the 2020 kidnapping and disappearance of youth leaders Alberth Sneider Centeno, Milton Joel Martínez Álvarez, Suami Aparicio Mejía García, Gerardo Misael Trochez Calix, and Junior Rafael Juárez Mejía from Garifuna territory in Triunfo de la Cruz, and so many others killed on the frontlines of territorial defense. Every day of injustice and impunity is one too many.

For Juan López and the Honduran people, the struggle for justice is now!

🚨 VIOLENCE and ILLEGAL DETENTION in Maranhão,

🚨 VIOLENCE and ILLEGAL DETENTION in Maranhão, Brazil 🚨

Families with the Landless Workers Movement (@movimentosemterra) from the Salete Moreno Camp, in the municipality of Itinga, Maranhão, have suffered violent and illegal action by the Military Police.

Three people were arrested and have been in police custody since Tuesday afternoon (July 30th). They were cowardly attacked, physically beaten and thrown to the ground. One woman is a human rights defender in the state.

Without a judicial warrant and without any express order, a convoy of around five Military Police vehicles and motorcycles went to the site accompanying the big landowner.

The União and Amaralina farms are occupied by around 100 families and the area is public. In dialogue with INCRA, the Brazilian government body for land use, it should be earmarked for land reform.

We demand urgent action from the authorities and effective action against the violence practiced against the families of rural workers and the immediate release of the detained activists.
